At the Biomolecular Structures and Drug Development Laboratory, we investigate the structural intricacies of biomolecules and their interactions to bridge the gap between fundamental science and translational medicine. Our primary focus is understanding the roles of non-canonical nucleic acid structures and their interactions with cellular proteins in the context of human disease. We aim to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms where these structures drive conditions such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.

A major aspect of our research is the identification of novel biological targets for drug discovery. By targeting specific DNA and RNA structures—and their interacting proteins—we aim to modulate disease pathogenesis. Leveraging our expertise in structural biology, biophysical and biochemical methods, and cellular studies, we are developing novel therapeutic modalities. These include DNA repair modulators for precision oncology and innovative RNA-targeting strategies utilising both small molecules and nucleic acid therapeutics.

Our current research themes include:

  1. Understanding the structural basis of nucleotide repeat expansion disorders.

  2. Development of natural product-inspired ligands for treatments for neurological diseases and cancer.

  3. Rational design of nucleic acid therapeutic drugs.
